Visceral force in an elegant guise
BACK TO OVERVIEWTeam sport: the BMW M8 Competition and the Tanaka black. BMW's sporty spearhead: Top performance characteristics and a breath-taking design make every 8 Series coupé from Munich many a driver's fondest wish. The 8 Series range topper is called M8 Competition and catapults the notion of sporty potential into dizzying heights. That's why, you don't want to lose traction with this one. Grippy tyres that will snuggle up against the latest, sporty-aggressive DOTZ Tanaka, can help you stay on track. The concave cross-spoke design with its many asymmetrical features is the rim's trademark.
Eyecatcher with a twist: the DOTZ Tanaka
In combination with the black carbon components, the brand-new DOTZ Tanaka black fits the M8 Competition like a glove. With its edged and deep centre section, the Tanaka is both a delicate and expressive eyecatcher, emphasizing the dynamic design look of the M8 Competition with an energetic twist.
The picture shows the Tanaka black in the dimension 10x21 inches (tyres: 275/30 R21), with the wheel spacers (5mm in the front, 10mm in the rear) further enhancing the M8’s hefty, intimidating look. The Tanaka’s second version, the “dark”, gives off a completely different impression. The gunmetal front-polished finish with the brightly shining rim flange creates an appealing contrast.
Both colour variations are of course “Made in Germany”, fully fit for TPMS and free-of-registration for many models in the Audi and BMW mid- and upper mid-range.
The dimensions range from 8x18 to 10x21 inches, adding to the M8 Competition’s powerful, confident appearance.
Full speed ahead!
BMW’s art of engine construction is legendary. Add to the mix the experts from M GmbH, and superlatives become commonplace. The 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, which also drives the M5, is at tilt: a whopping 625hp and 750 torque don’t just sound like mad power.
When the M8 Competition blasts you from 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds, it feels like you’re taking off.
xDrive is one of the M8 Competition’s magic words. It’s the all-wheel-drive system that channels the boisterous power to the road without slip. But the 2+2 coupé with its elegant lines can also take it up a notch. The MDM mode, for example, enables the four-wheel-drive to be more tail-heavy and gives the ESP more tolerance, allowing for controlled drifting. If you like extremes, you can also go with just the rear-wheel drive.
Optimised technology, high-tech look
At M Gmbh, they have put a lot of work into the chassis so that the formidable performance generates the highest-possible driving fun in terms of lateral dynamics. It starts with the negative camber on the front axle, continues in the form of a stiffer engine mounting and bearings and doesn’t stop at more powerful anti-roll bars. We would also like to mention the rear track-control arms that sit in ball-and-socket joints instead of rubber bearings.
All of this cannot be seen, because even the M8 Competition shows restraint and does without excessive spoiler elements. Having said that, connoisseurs will identify the 8 Series range topper at a glance: The standard carbon-fibre roof with the double-bubble contour is exceptional, as are the large air intakes at the front, the massive rear diffusor, the M-specific side gills or the blacked-out kidney grille frame.
