DOTZ Misano Concept: What a little rim design study can do...
BACK TO OVERVIEW"The best ideas usually happen in hindsight," says DOTZ chief designer Christian Haderer about the completed DOTZ project car, the DD2.JZ. It's been more than one and a half years since the first idea hit him, with the DOTZ Misano Concept initially having been a rim concept study.
In the beginning there were only a few lines on a sheet of paper, but they were special. “All of a sudden, I had the idea to create a rim for an exceptional car which was even more exceptional,” says Haderer. So, one thing led to another, and in the blink of an eye a fully-fledged concept emerged, at least in rough outlines. Now, the rim manufacturer needed to put down on paper a less than ordinary idea to the last detail and get everybody involved on board. The goal was clear: designing the perfect rim for a project car never seen before. The result, the DOTZ Misano Concept, is impressive, because during the modifications for the DOTZ project car DD2.JZ another idea started to form, i.e. realizing the rim study. The DOTZ Misano Concept became a tuning rim in a road version – the DOTZ Misano.
Accomplished rim design
As a manufacturer of wheels two things come naturally to DOTZ: firstly, the perfect design and secondly, 100 percent technically verified solutions. The combination of both results in an accomplished rim concept. Therefore, the objective for the project car DD2.JZ was to find the optimum solution. The engine-related and body-technical adaptations, once more, required the core competence of Christian Haderer and his colleagues from the technical development division. Concept means customised
In the beginning there were the design and the question about the best visual match for the custom-modified BMW Z4. The decision was made in favour of a three-part wheel in a cross-spoke design. The next step involved taking into account all technical parameters such as braking system, wheel well edges, space in the interior of the wheel well – with the keywords being suspension arm and dampers. The space, or technically phrased, the “installation space” defines the maximum width and offset of the new wheels, and not to forget, the tyres that will be used. Christian Haderer points out: “Weight optimisation was, of course, the guiding thought, and that’s why the design was changed in several steps. In the end, the outcome was positive because the design of the widebody requires a massive deep lip and this way we have achieved a perfect mix of design and trend – maximum concave.”
DOTZ is pushing the limits
Concave construction is all about achieving maximum depth. Technical expertise and skill allowed DOTZ to accomplish “maximum performance”. Maximum thin spokes pairs, the overall composition of which resembles delicate tuning forks, make the new Misano unique.
The concept version specified two parameters: deep dish and an open spokes design, which was also applied in the road version with due regard to all statutory regulations.World premiere at the Essen Motor Show
“The Beast”, the project car’s unofficial moniker, celebrated its world premiere, together with the new DOTZ Misano road version, at the Essen Motor Show 2018. The strong visitor turnout at the DOTZ booth was a confirmation for Christian Haderer and the DD2.JZ project. “It’s a great feeling and affirmation when you see the big eyes of many visitors and interested crowd when they see the car for the first time from up close,” Christian Haderer concludes.DOTZ DD2.JZ – the truly unique project car
A comparison of new and old technology – marking the new release of the BMW Z4 successor and the Toyota Supra at the end of 2018, respectively is the project goal. DOTZ is equipping the venerable hull of a Z4 convertible with a 2JZ GTE Toyota engine. The 3-l twin turbo engine has been way ahead of its time, even in the year dot due to the powertrain’s enormous potential. Originally installed in the Toyota Supra MK4 and the Toyota Aristo, the powerhouse managed to show off its performance power mostly in the throttled state only. Therefore, Dotz decided to bring the machine closer to its actual limits.
Misano stands for motorsport
At a first glance, the Italian seaside resort of Misano south of Bologna seems like many others along the Adriatic coast. But motorsport fans hear instant bells of bliss at the mention of the name. The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli stands for MotoGP, Superbike and DTM – or in other words, technology, power and skill. Motorsport at its limit. Just about right as a namesake for the new DOTZ alloy rim.
